A 10-man Wits University team held on for dear life to salvage a 1-1 draw in their Castle Premiership clash against Premier Soccer League champions Orlando Pirates at the Oppenheimer stadium on Wednesday night. Wits led 1-0 at half-time.
The point keeps the students in the hunt for the Pirates league crown. The students opted to play this home match in Orkney and finished the match with 10 men after their Bafana Bafana midfielder Benson Mhlongo was sent off midway through the second half. Mhlongo was booked in the first half.
The home side started brightly and took the lead after six minutes when their Zimbabwean star winger Alois Bunjira made it 1-0.
But Wits survived until three minutes after the break when Bucs Democratic Republic of Congo striker Kabanga Tshamala equalised and earned the Buccaneers a share of the points.
Mhlongo was sent for an early shower and Pirates had Wits under a lot of pressure but the Clever Boys did well to hold on and share the points. – Sapa
