United want Rui Costa

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson wants Portugal’s Rui Costa to add midfield sparkle to his English Premiership challenge.

Ferguson is offering to take the Portugal midfielder on loan from AC Milan and pick up his £55 000-a-week salary.

Costa, who scored a 20m wonder goal against England in Euro 2004, is considering the offer after both clubs agreed terms, The Sun reported.

Milan were believed to be keen to offload Costa from their wage bill as Brazilian star Kaka has moved ahead in the pecking order.

Costa (32) retired from international football at the end of Euro 2004 to concentrate on his club and spend more time with his wife, Rute.

Ferguson wants to add creativity and experience to his midfield and is keen on a player with no commitments to his national team.

Old Trafford’s Portuguese number two Carlos Queiroz is a big fan of Costa.

Costa is a brilliant passer with excellent close control. He can also run with the ball and Ferguson believes he can do plenty of damage in the Premiership. — Sapa-AFP
