Mayor arrested on fraud charge

The mayor, speaker and city manager of the Emthanjeni Municipality in De Aar have been arrested on charges of fraud, Northern Cape police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson Inspector Tony Modise said mayor Boy Markman (38), speaker Patrick van Standen (50) and city manager Moggamat Manue (37) were apprehended at the municipal offices in the morning.

The trio allegedly offered a local businessman a tender on July 2 in exchange for a kickback.

The tender involved a municipal house that is to be sold at Hanover in the municipal area of Emthanjeni.

The businessman handed one of the three a cheque for R15 000, which he later paid into his bank account.

The three appeared in the Phillipstown magistrate’s court on charges of fraud on Monday and were granted bail of R1 000 each.

The case was postponed to August 18. — Sapa
