Storm nearly destroys morale

It was a day like any other. I woke up early in the morning and got ready for work. I was in a good mood because an NGO had helped us by donating four classrooms that we had desired for quite a long time.

School started at the usual time and the lessons went on as usual. It was November 1999 and the learners were anxious because exams were to be written the following week.

We closed the school as normal. As soon as I arrived home, a terrible wind began blowing, accompanied by heavy rain.

The wind and rain lashed us for about 30 minutes. After it had died down, I went outside to see if there was any damage. What I saw shocked me. The roof of the newly built classroom had been blown away. Books were scattered all over the place, wet and damaged — and what caused the greatest pain was to realise that we were back to square one. We were left with only three classrooms. I could not hold back the tears.

Many thank to Mr Landsberg, in the planning section in our regional office, who came to our rescue by sending people to repair the damage in a short space of time.
