Foundations for Education – Narrowing the digital divide

YOUR GUIDE TO INVESTING IN EDUCATION

Specialist computer company Workgroup recently donated software valued at R2,5-million to government as part of its social responsibility programme.

Workgroup’s managing director Vaughn Parkin made the donation to the Departments of Education and Social Development and to nine Gauteng charities.

”Computer literacy is a vital skill in today’s modern world, with many schools incorporating a computer programme as part of their curriculum. However, many South African schools have been unable to achieve this due to lack of funding,” he said.

”Many children do not have access to proper education due to a variety of reasons, one of these being lack of computers and software. We would like to take this opportunity to contribute towards uplifting education,” Parkin added.

Products such as Reading Blaster, Maths Blaster, Jump Start, Excel at Mathematics and Excel at Middle School were handed over to the adviser for the Department of Social Development, Viviene Taylor, and a representative from the Department of Education, Edcent Williams.

Williams, the department’s national chief director for school education, commended Workgroup for their commitment to early childhood development.

He added that the government did not have sufficient funds and relied on synergies like this to add value to childrens’ lives.

”At government level, we are gladly holding out our hands for partnerships. It is occasions like this and people like these whom we count on for their commitment.”
