School Daze – Straight talk

Fast-talking 5fm breakfast show host Mark Gillman does not have many fond memories of school, as Cheryl Naidu discovered

Tell us a bit about your school days.

Gosh, well I barely remember the name of my school. I was in a convent school. I went to schools in Cape Town and in Howick.

What were your favourite subjects at schools?

History and geography and break.

Were you considered a role-model at school?

Definitely not. I was no sporting hero or prefect. I don’t see why they (prefects) should be considered role-models, it’s sick training pupils to be watchdogs.

Who was your favourite teacher?

No one in particular.

What did you like about school?

Nothing. Well actually I liked being in the school band, I played the side drum in primary school, so I couldn’t wait to get into high school to be in the cadets.

What did you dislike about school?

It was a chore to get up for.

What advice do you have for learners?

I have just two words: Question everything! Don’t just accept everything you are taught – question!

Advice to students wanting to go into broadcasting?

Do it because you want to do it. Nine out of 10 people who become disc jockeys do so for the wrong reasons – you know there is this whole glamour aspect. I do this because I see it as an extension of my personality.
