Sixty injured in Soweto train crash

Sixty people were injured, 10 critically, on Wednesday night when two Metrorail trains collided at Merafe station in Naledi, Soweto, following a power failure in the area.

”Both trains were from Johannesburg, going to Naledi. What happened was that a train crashed into a stationary one due to the power failure,” said Metrorail marketing and communications manager Brenda Motau.

”The stationary train stopped at Merafe when the power went off.”

She said among the badly injured were the train driver and the guard of the stationary one.

Motau said the cause of the power failure is being investigated. — Sapa
