Pick ‘n Pay strike to go ahead despite talks

A strike by about 20 000 Pick ‘n Pay workers will go ahead on Friday regardless of the outcome of wage negotiations, the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) said at a press briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday.

”More than 20 000 members nationwide in 150 outlets will go on strike,” Saccawu general secretary Mduduzi Mbongwe said.

The union was due to meet Pick ‘n Pay management at 2pm on Thursday under the auspices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to discuss picketing rules and wage demands.

Pick ‘n Pay is offering a R310 increase per month (7,9%) and the union is demanding a R400 increase (12%).

Mbongwe said the strike will go ahead regardless of the outcome of the talks because any proposals made by Pick ‘n Pay will first have to be communicated to their members for feedback.

”We are committed to exploring all avenues and at resolving this wage dispute. Demand for an across-the-board increase is reasonable, fair and justified.” — Sapa
