South Africa’s Retief Goosen scored 32 points to capture his first PGA Tour title this year by winning The International.
After rain postponed Thursday’s first round, 63 players were to take the course for the final two rounds on Sunday.
There normally was a second cut where the field is reduced to the top 36 players and ties, but in an effort to play 36 holes, there was no third-round cut.
Goosen scored eight points in the third round, putting him within four of leader Brandt Jobe entering the final 18 holes.
The South African scored seven points in the final round, but that was good enough to finish one point ahead of Jobe, who was minus-3 over the final 18 holes.
The win could not come at better time for Goosen, who will be one of the favourites at next week’s PGA Championship, the final major of the season. Goosen led after three round at the US Open before falling apart and finished tied for fifth at the British Open.
It was Goosen’s 11th career victory and first since last season’s Tour Championship. The 36-year-old collected $900 000 for his latest victory.
The International is the lone PGA Tour event to use a modified Stableford format, awarding points for birdies and better and subtracting points for bogeys and worse.
Players received two points for a birdie, five for an eagle and eight for a double-eagle and lost a point for a bogey and three points for a double-bogey or worse. – Sapa-AFP
