The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) says that its members will begin to return to work on Monday.
This comes after the union’s announced on Sunday that it was suspending its week-long strike.
Samwu spokesperson Roger Ronnie said that the wage dispute between the union and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) remains unresolved.
Ronnie added that the union was concerned that the strike would become counter-productive if it continued.
He claimed that the strike crippled services around the country with no rubbish collected and bus services suspended.
The union said services should be fully operational by Tuesday.
The union has, meanwhile, rejected a bargaining council compromise on wage negotiations.
The offer included a further 1,5% increase on the 6% increase already implemented by Salga.
Samwu said the offer fell short of its demands. – Sapa
