Ten people burnt to death on Friday in Abuja, Nigeria, when the bus in which they were travelling was hit by drunken motorist, causing the vehicle to catch fire.
The 10 had just finished work at a hotel and were travelling to a settlement on the outskirt of Abuja in a staff bus.
A car driven by a motorist allegedly returning from an overnight drinking spree rammed into the bus after racing through a red traffic light.
The bus somersaulted several times before bursting into flames, a witness said. None of the passengers escaped. The driver of the car sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, the witness said.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Commission then arrived on the scene. Rescue workers retrieved the charred remains of the 10 from the bus.
A spokesperson for the Road Safety Commission, Clement Osita, said three bottles of alcohol were found in the car. The driver admitted to being intoxicated. — Sapa-DPA
