Bucks drown in goal avalanche

Supersport United took a leaf from the goal-scoring fortunes of their city rivals Mamelodi Sundowns when they drowned Bush Bucks with an avalanche of goals at Loftus Versfeld on Thursday evening.

United were in no festive mood as they recorded a clinical and comprehensive 6-0 victory over the bottom-of-the-log Bucks.

After a string of unsatisfactory results recently, United came out guns blazing in the opening exchanges, softening the already shaky Bucks defence.

And with the Bucks defence still trying to find their feet on the lush Loftus pastures, United struck in the 17th minute through an easy tap-in from Katlego Mphela.

In the 32nd minute, United striker Abram Raselemane hit a rocket from outside the Bucks’ danger zone to extend the hosts’ lead to 2-0 going into the half-time break.

Bucks also proved to be their own worst enemy as Sibusiso Mazibuko squandered a golden opportunity when his penalty failed to deceive Calvin Marlin in the latter stages of the first half.

The second half was no different, as Bush Bucks hardly touched the ball while United camped in their half.

Siboniso Gaxa extended the hosts’ lead to 3-0 with a well-struck 25m volley in the 56th minute.

And with Bucks desperately trying to quash the United tide of attacks by packing bodies deep in their half, United continued to unleash the long-range missiles.

Daine Klate, often the provider, also joined in the festivities and his long-range strike found Bucks goalkeeper Sheldon Baatjies napping again, to guarantee the three points for United.

For good measure, Raselemane and Mphela finished off their braces in the 80th and 88th minutes respectively to give Bucks a Christmas they would like to forget. — Sapa
