Australian police said on Wednesday that they will counter an SMS service that tips off motorists about the location of random breath testing (RBT) patrol cars by constantly shifting their location.
Road Spy, launched on Queensland’s Gold Coast earlier this week, provides subscribers with SMSs alerting them to the locations of RBT patrols as well as radar and speed-camera traps.
Queensland state’s government police minister, Judy Spence, condemned the initiative and promised to draft legislation to put Road Spy out of business.
”This is a company that is aiming to make a quick buck by gambling with the lives of motorists,” Spence told Australia’s AAP news agency.
In the interim, she has instructed police Commissioner Bob Atkinson to shift RBTs more regularly.
”On the Gold Coast, we will have more sites, and we will be there for less time,” Atkinson said. ”Police will set up a random breath-testing site, they will be there for about an hour, then they will dismantle that site and move on to another site.” — Sapa-DPA
