Giuseppe Rossi scored twice while Louis Saha, Kieran Richardson and Ryan Giggs had a goal each to pace Manchester United over semi-pro Burton Albion 5-0 on Wednesday in their English FA Cup third-round replay.
Everton also advanced to the fourth round with a 1-0 victory over League Championship side Millwall.
Saha and Rossi put Manchester United ahead 2-0 by the 23rd minute, quickly overwhelming Burton Albion, who held the 15-time league champions and 11-time Cup champions to a 0-0 draw 10 days earlier.
Playing without suspended Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, United started a second-choice team yet led when Saha scored off Richardson’s cross in the seventh minute and Rossi, an American-born Italian, added a close-in header.
Richardson tallied off a counter in the 52nd minute, a blistering, 18m, left-footed shot before a near sell-out crowd at Old Trafford.
Giggs added a sharp-angled shot in the 68th minute off a pass from Rossi, who completed the scoring with a blast from the top of the penalty area in injury time.
It was United’s first victory of the new year after failing to win any of their first four. United already have been eliminated from the European Champions League and lost 3-1 to crosstown rivals Man City last weekend.
The win puts Man United into the fourth round against Wolverhampton.
In the other game, Tim Cahill scored in the 72nd minute at Goodison Park to lead Everton.
