Police have released the man taken in for questioning in connection with the murder of the four-year-old grandchild of Transvaal Judge President Bernard Ngoepe.
”Police could not link the man to the incident, so he was released on Friday. Investigations will continue,” police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht said on Saturday.
Makgabo Bernice Matlala’s killers are still on the run, despite an intensive police manhunt.
Her body was discovered under a bed in her parents’ home in Lenasia at 11.45am by forensic and crime-scene police, said Martins-Engelbrecht.
This happened nearly 12 hours after the child — the daughter of Springs magistrate Stephen Matlala — was feared kidnapped after a robbery in which three men gang-raped her 57-year-old nanny and ransacked the house.
The man released was not thought to be one of the attackers, said Martins-Engelbrecht. However, it was believed he may in some way be involved in the incident, she said.
The police had received information that he was somehow involved with the killers.
Police are looking for at least three assailants, based on the nanny’s statement. — Sapa
