Australian medallist victim of suspected drink spiking

Police are investigating whether someone spiked the drink of one of Australia’s gold-medal winning swimmers while she was celebrating her Commonwealth Games win in Melbourne, officials said on Monday.

Joanna Fargus, who won the 200m backstroke event, began to feel dizzy and nauseous while out with teammates on Saturday night, Australian chef de mission John Devitt said.

”Joanna was assisted immediately by ambulance officers and the management of the swimming team was notified,” he said.

”Joanna and her teammates returned to the [athletes’] village where she was examined by the team’s medical staff. It is believed her drink may have been spiked.”

Devitt said the swimmer, who had been at The Last Lap nightclub in central Melbourne on Saturday night, had fully recovered and the matter was now being investigated by police.

Victoria Police chief commissioner Christine Nixon said the athlete had not been assaulted or harmed and forensic officers were working on the case.

”Police may also view video surveillance of the venue,” she said. – AFP
