Latest and greatest motorcycles on display

Motorcyclists, ex-motorcyclists and wannabe motorcyclists are in for the treat of the year at the sixth annual Association of Motorcycle Importers and Distributors (Amid) motorcycle and quad lifestyle expo at Kyalami next weekend (May 5 to 7).

The expo has secured a naming-rights partner in events organisers and promoters Penguin International, and attendance is yet again expected to top 20 000 over the three days.

The show is aimed at the family, with entertainment for all. Licensed riders can test the latest road machines from all the importers around the famous racetrack, while there will be a quad and off-road track for those who don’t like riding on the hard stuff. There will also be a scooter training course and track, and Freestyle Moto-X riders will put on an awesome display for all. Brian Capper, South Africa’s outstanding stunt rider, will also put his awesome talent on display daily.

New models on display include BMW’s F800S and F800 ST parallel twins, Honda’s latest 1 000cc Fireblade, Kawasaki’s ZX-10R, Triumph’s stunning new 675cc triple, Suzuki’s latest GSX-R 750, Harley-Davidson’s elegant cruisers and its Buell streetfighters, and an enormous fleet of scooters and quads.

There will also be a full range of accessories and numerous racing machines, including the Suzuki GSX-R 750 that took Hudson Kennaugh to victory in 2005.

The gates open at 9am and close at 5pm on Friday and Saturday (and shut an hour earlier on Sunday). Admission is R30 per person and free for those who can convince the people at the gate that they are under 12.

To test-ride a motorcycle around the racetrack you’ll need a valid motorcycle licence, and a fee of between R10 and R60 per machine for two laps. You’ll also need appropriate protective gear, so don’t arrive in slops and shorts if you want to experience the new machines. Brave souls who don’t have licences can ride pillion with an experienced instructor. Demo rides will cease at 4pm each day.

Motorcycling is booming in South Africa, with sales higher than they’ve been in 20 years. If you’re a rider, or are considering getting back into biking, this will be the only chance you get all year to see and test-ride the various models back to back.
