Rock singer Arno Carstens admits that he would prefer being driven around by a chauffeur.
What was the first car you bought and what influenced the purchase?
A Mercedes 200. It was in great condition for a good price.
What’s your dream car and do you think you’ll ever own it?
A Bentley. I hope to own one, but who knows what the future will bring.
If you had a weekend to drive to any destination in South Africa, where would you go, what car would you be driving and who would you take?
I would drive a Mercedes to Calvinia with Melanie [Machattie — Arno’s fiancée].
Other than your own tunes, what would the music be?
Anything and everything from Queens of the Stone Age to Katie Melua.
In which car have you had the most, ahem, nude girls in the backseat?
Most tour buses.
When was the last time you knowingly broke a traffic law?
Yesterday, running a red light.
How much was your most expensive traffic fine and what was it for?
R500 for talking on the phone.
Ever had a particularly good or bad experience with a traffic cop?
I think most people have a story to tell about bribery on the roads in South Africa. It’s almost offered as an option when you get stopped!
What annoys you most about other drivers?
Road rage. It’s totally unnecessary.
What’s the nastiest thing you’ve done to another car or had done to your car?
Someone stuck a sticker on my bumper.
What car are you currently driving and why?
I have a Mercedes and a VW Jetta. The Merc is pretty old, but I can’t give it up. It has sentimental value. I am looking to get a new car, hopefully a 4×4.
If you had to pimp your ride, what accessories would you consider installing?
I would give my old Merc some cool rims.
Which car have you owned that has attracted the most attention for any reason?
None of them — I’m still waiting for my 15 minutes of road fame.
Do you enjoy driving or would you prefer to be driven around by a chauffeur?
I would prefer a chauffeur, I’m lazy!
What gadget should car manufacturers put into cars that would make your life easier?
I love the idea of TV in a car.
