Chaos erupted in Reiger Park, Boksburg, when residents clashed with metro police over illegal electricity connections on Thursday.
Inspector Jimmy Makobo said employees of a private electricity company, JAR, had been sent to the area to disconnect illegal connections when about 500 locals became violent.
”A 61-year-old-man was injured and one person arrested in connection with this incident. He is being detained at the Boksburg police station”, he said.
The man was sent to the Boksburg MediCross Hospital.
”The metro police came to assist and found the road blocked with burnt tyres and big rocks. When they tried to remove them, the residents started throwing rocks at them”, Makobo said.
Three cars a, 4×4 Nissan bakkie, A Corsa bakkie and a Ford Monteo were damaged.
Three suspects were arrested and charged with public violence.
They will appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The metro police will patrol the area to ensure that no violence occurs. — Sapa
