New auditor general gets the nod

South Africa’s National Assembly has given the nod to an ad hoc committee recommendation that Terrence Mncedisi Nombembe, the current Deputy Auditor General, be approved as the new auditor general. The current Auditor General, Shauket Fakie, retires at the end of November.

Altogether 247 MPs voted in favour of the recommended candidate.

The announcement was made by chairperson of committees Geoff Doidge, an African National Congress MP, with official opposition deputy Democratic Alliance (DA) chief whip Mike Ellis noting that it was a “tribute to democracy” that the ruling African National Congress had voted with the DA.

Doidge, who quipped that he thought it was the other way around, said the vote represented the required majority in terms of the Constitution.

Other candidates that had been shortlisted for the post were Abdul Kariem Hoosain, Diatile Elizabeth Zondo and Imitiaz Fazel. — I-Net Bridge
