Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, South Africa’s brilliant 800m runner and winner at the Zurich Weltklasse Golden League meeting a few days ago, added another outstanding victory in a fast one minute and 44,14 seconds to his impressive list in Monaco on Sunday.
He competed at the Herculis IAAF Super Grand Prix and once again defeated most of the world’s best.
The victory was his fourth in four European races since July 16. A delighted Mulaudzi said after the race that he was hoping to finish his European sojourn on a high note in Rieti, next Sunday.
The Monaco race was full of depth, with the first five all finishing below one minute and 45 seconds. William Yiampoy (1:44,31) of Kenya and Youssef Saad Kamel (1:44,59) of Bahrain filled the other podium spots. Wilfred Bungei crossed the finish in sixth place in one minute and 45,12 seconds.
South Africa’s star hurdlers LJ van Zyl and Alwyn Myburgh also featured prominently in the 400m hurdles, in which European champion Periklis Iakovakis of Greece repeated his Zurich victory although none of the American runners took part.
Iakovakis won in 48,27 seconds with LJ van Zyl third in the same time as the Jamaican veteran, Danny McFarlane, who just managed to spoil Van Zyl’s party. Both were credited with 48,52 seconds while Myburgh had to settle for sixth in 48,80 seconds.
All these performances were very good considering they were all involved in exceptionally fast races in Zurich on Friday. — Sapa
