De Jesus proves to be a match-winner

Wily Brazilian striker Marcos de Jesus proved the match-winner in a 1-0 success between Wits University’s and Lamontville Golden Arrows at a boisterous Bidvest Stadium on Friday night.

De Jesus had the 5 000-strong crowd in raptures after scoring a stunning 25m goal in the 62nd minute.

In the process, Wits moved to six place in the log table and provided ample evidence the Students will be a force to be reckoned with in the PSL this season.

Yet despite Arrows’ unhappy situation at second from bottom in the log, the Durban club again produced a pleasing brand of inventive soccer that belied their lowly position.

Wits, in fact, were lucky to survive a 90th minute onslaught, with the ball barely cleared off the goal-line when an equaliser seemed a certainty after Vusi Dlamini had been presented with a golden opportunity.

On another occasion in the closing minutes Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Joseph was required to race 20m outside his penalty to make a despairing clearance.

Wits, however, were business-like and more potent in front of goal and generally looked the likelier team to score, with De Jesus giving fair warning of what was to follow when he headed a Phil Evans centre against the crossbar in the 24th minute. – Sapa
