Soweto ATM blasted open in robbery attempt

An automated teller machine (ATM) at a petrol station in Pimville was badly damaged after dynamite was used to blow it open on Monday morning, Soweto police said.

Sergeant Richard Munyai said the incident occurred at about 1am.

”The petrol attendants said they smelled something funny and went to investigate. Four men told them to move away, and seconds later they heard a blast,” said Munyai.

The four men were unable to take any money from the machine and ran away.

Munyai said the men were not armed. ”It seems they used the dynamite used in mines.”

Police will investigate whether there are any links between Monday morning’s incident and a blast at a Standard Bank ATM three weeks ago where an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

”We are still investigating whether they used the same explosives, but I cannot say that the incidents are related yet,” Munyai said. — Sapa
