Wits salvage point against Santos

Bidvest Wits salvaged a point when they played to a goalless draw in their Premier Soccer League encounter against Santos at the Greenpoint Stadium on Friday night.

Wits toiled hard all evening but found the Santos defence in form, especially Musa Ongao who was outstanding as he broke up many of the Wits waves of attack.

The visitors were very physical and could count themselves fortunate as only two of their players were booked.

Santos should have taken the lead in the fourth minute when Eleazar Rogers broke through with only Moeneeb Josephs in front, but he kicked the ball against Josephs’s legs instead of burying it in the back of the net.

A minute later, Dipsy Selolwane blasted the ball high over the Wits bar from the edge of the box.

Wits came close in the 12th minute when, from a free kick, Phil Evans’s header just breezed the left upright.

Rogers saw Josephs off his line in the 36th minute and lobbed the ball goalward but not high enough as the goalkeeper managed to pluck it out of the air.

In the 44th minute, Abraham Raselemane hit an 18m low shot that shaved the Santos upright. In the 58th minute, Josephs brought off a brilliant save when Selolwane shot from the edge, again.

Both teams were guilty of poor passing and aimless kicking. — Sapa
