Narrow escape for 20 bathers in Durban

eThekwini Pro Lifeguards on Thursday rescued 20 bathers who had been swept off a sandbank at the Wedge at Durban’s central beach, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a youth of 18 was still missing and rescuers would continue searching for him.

The Vodacom Netcare 911 Surf Rescue helicopter, eThekwini Municipal Pro Lifeguards, Police Search and Rescue and the South African Lifesaving Nissan Surf Rescue vehicle responded to ”reports of a mass drowning in progress,” Lambinon said.

”On arrival on-scene, the Vodacom Netcare 911 Surf Rescue helicopter joined in a search for a missing male who is presumed to have drowned.

”A further 20 people had been rescued by eThekwini Pro Lifeguards in the same incident after the group were swept off a sandbank.

Police Search and Rescue and eThekwini Pro Lifeguards would continue searching for the missing teenager. – Sapa
