Santos too strong for SuperSport

A brace by Erwin Isaacs gave Santos a 2-1 victory over SuperSport United in a Premier Soccer League game played at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night. This was after trailing 1-0 at the interval.

The visitors played with only ten men in the second half after George Mofokeng was sent off for an early shower just before the end of the first half.

SuperSport started at a great pace and had the Santos defence under severe pressure. This paid off in the eighth minute as Katlego Mashego picked up a poor clearance and raced down the left, cut in and kicked he ball from the back line, which hit Wayne Roberts’ body and entered the net.

Nine minutes later, Mashego almost got his second goal but this time Roberts was wide awake and turned the ball around for a corner kick.

Santos came close in the 26th minute to levelling the score when Jonathan Armogam put in a piledriver, which was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Denis Onyango as he dived to his left.

On the stroke of half time, Koena Mathopo (United’s discarded player who joined Santos) was brought down by Mofokeng as he had a clear run towards goal. Mofekeng saved a certain goal but was shown the red card.

Santos levelled the score in the 61st minute when the visitors’ Ricardo Katza handled in the box and Isaacs scored from the penalty spot.

The home side took the lead in the 75th minute when Mathopo hit his marker, cut in and did not try to score himself but squared the ball to Isaacs, who easily tapped home. — Sapa
