Kebble donation: Case closed for W Cape ANC

The African National Congress’s (ANC) Western Cape branch considers the matter of murdered businessman Brett Kebble’s donations closed, it said on Wednesday.

”ANC Western Cape officials in the form of [provincial secretary] Mcebisi Skwatsha and treasurer Lynn Brown met with liquidators and discussed the matter,” said spokesperson Garth Strachan.

”We provided the necessary evidence, receipt of R800 000, and as far as we are concerned the matter is closed. We regard the donations taken in good faith. If a legal process decides otherwise, we’ll take it from there.”

Strachan said the donations were made ”long before” any knowledge of Kebble’s impropriety surfaced.

In March, trustees of Kebble’s estate said they wanted the money back because, under insolvency law, it was not permissible to make donations while in debt.

On Wednesday, they declined any further comment on the matter.

Stellenbosch-based attorney Hans Klopper, MD of Independent Corporate Recovery Advisors, confirmed on March 12 that the ANC had been paid in the region of R24-million, as reported by the Sunday Times.

He said at the time that should the ANC refuse to repay the money, trustees could turn to the Insolvency Act.
