‘The devil made me do it’

A 39-year-old man accused of stealing two pairs of shoes from a Rustenburg Pep clothing store has blamed the devil for his crime.

Petrus Mthetwa, of Kanana village near Rustenburg, told the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday that he went to the store on April 3 to buy shoes for his two children.

He realised once in the shop that he had lost his money through a hole in his pocket.

”The evil spirit told me to take the shoes. I put them in my pockets and left on the devil’s instruction,” he told the court.

Security guards searched him at the door and he was arrested after they found the shoes in his pockets.

Mthetwa pleaded guilty and was convicted of shoplifting.

The case was postponed to April 26 for sentencing. — Sapa
