The rape case against Orlando Pirates player Jabu Mahlangu was thrown out of the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday.
”The case was thrown out because of insufficient evidence, so he’s a free man,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht.
The 26-year-old soccer player handed himself over to police on Wednesday morning.
He was accused of raping a 17-year-old Pretoria girl at a Mondeor house on Monday.
The Sowetan newspaper on Wednesday reported that Mahlangu was introduced to the girl by his brother’s girlfriend on Saturday.
They spent the night partying and then the girl and her sister were dropped off at home.
On Sunday, the girls called Mahlangu’s brother to pick them up from Kempton Park, which they did, the report said.
Mahlangu and the girl had excused themselves from the rest of their companions for some privacy when she received a telephone call and left.
”I was surprised and so were several people who were there to learn, this [Wednesday] morning, that she had laid these charges against me,” Mahlangu told the newspaper. — Sapa
