Durban editor shot in attempted hijacking

The editor of the Mercury newspaper was shot and wounded in an attempted hijacking at his Durban home, police said on Wednesday.

Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said the attack happened as David Canning was driving up the driveway of his house in Durban’s Kloof suburb around 9.30pm on Tuesday.

Two men approached his car, one wielding a firearm. In a bid to avert the attack, Canning reversed. As he did so, the gunman fired a shot through the driver’s window.

The bullet went through Canning’s right forearm and struck his thigh. The two men ran away.

Netcare 911 paramedics took Canning to St Augustine’s Hospital where he is reported to be in a stable condition.
