Archbishop Desmond Tutu said Wednesday he was doing “quite well” following a recent article about the recurrence of his prostate cancer.
“I am deeply touched by the expressions of concern and assurances of prayer for my recovery and I thank all concerned,” Tutu said in a statement.
British newspaper the Times reported Monday that the 75-year-old Anglican church archbishop was still battling the cancer that had returned but that he was in good health.
“The London Times article seems to suggest that the recurrence of my prostate cancer is very recent,” the statement added.
“In fact I have been receiving hormonal treatment since early last year and doing quite well. But loving concern and prayer can never be superfluous. Thank you.”
Tutu’s office, which was on Monday flooded with calls and emails following the story, said his health was being monitored by his doctors.
Affectionately known as “The Arch”, Tutu was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996. He received successful radiation treatment in New York.
But tests taken in 2000 showed that the cancer had returned.
