Pupils sent home after bomb threat

Glenanda Primary School in Glenvista, south of Johannesburg, was evacuated after a bomb threat on Tuesday morning, principal Graham King said.

He said 1 200 pupils were sent home after a telephone call by an anonymous man at 9am.

”The gentleman phoned the school and made a bomb threat,” said the principal.

”Due to the seriousness of the threat we had to alert parents to fetch their children through an SMS message because the children’s safety is a priority.”

King could not say whether the threat was linked to the pay strike by public servants.

Several schools that kept on functioning amid the strike have been targets of intimidatory tactics.

Police officers from Mondeor were called to the school but found nothing amiss, said Johannesburg police spokesperson Cheryl Engelbrecht.

”The officers evacuated the school and searched it but nothing was found.”

She said police were monitoring the situation and investigating the matter.

King said it was not clear when the pupils will return to school, adding that this ”was up to the parents to decide”.

”Teachers will be at the school on Wednesday and it is entirely up to the parents to decide whether to bring the children to the school or not.” – Sapa
