Striking metal and engineering workers handed over a memorandum to an employer representative in Johannesburg on Monday.
The memorandum was received by Brian Angus on behalf of the Steel and Engineering Industry Federation of South Africa.
The trade unions, led by the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa, demanded a 10% wage increase for the lowest grade and 9% for the highest grade workers for the next three years.
Receiving the memorandum, Angus told the thousands of protesters that employers would study the demands.
”I can assure you that the employer will pay attention to the demands. We’ll have a meeting tomorrow [Tuesday] where these matters will be further discussed,” Angus said.
The workers marched to Beyers Naude Square in the city centre where union leaders were expected to address them on Monday afternoon. – Sapa
