The porting experience

After comparing packages, I discovered that I could save R40 a month by porting to MTN. Although this does not sound like a lot, over a two-year contract I will save R960.

As my Vodacom contract was about to end, I decided to port. I had to complete a new application form, with all the Fica requirements, which was a real hassle. At that point, I wondered whether it would not have been easier to stick with my current provider. But thereafter the process was smooth.

When I contacted Vodacom to give it a month’s notice (it can catch you out with that), I was informed that I could notify it of the cancellation only once I had ported. It told me I needed to do the switch before the 15th of the month, otherwise I would be charged for the following month.

I was not aware of this up front so it is definitely a good idea to contact your current provider to find out the rules. The new service provider informed Vodacom once it had my forms and I received a phone call from Vodacom requesting that I notify it of the cancellation once the port had been successful.

This ensured that at no time was I without connectivity. My SIM card and new phone were delivered to me two days before I was to port. The porting was a seamless process and occurred overnight.

The following day, I informed Vodacom and the cancellation took place.

In conclusion, the porting process is a smooth one, if all your Fica documents are at hand.
