Another body was found on Friday in the sugar-cane fields surrounding Umzinto’s Shayamoya township, police said on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Zandra Hechter said skeletal remains of a woman were found by workers who were burning the sugar-cane fields at the time.
”This brings the total number of women’s bodies found in the sugar-cane fields to nine since the beginning of September,” said Hechter.
This came after another 27-year-old man from Inanda was taken in for questioning on Wednesday evening in connection with the Umzinto serial killings.
Hechter said the man was formally charged on Friday and was expected to appear in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Police initially arrested five people, three women and two men, in connection with the murders.
Two were later released and two men and a woman appeared in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on charges of abduction and murder last week. — Sapa
