Man in court for French chef’s murder

A 21-year-old man charged with murdering a well-known French chef appeared briefly in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast on Friday. Theleka Quntu is alleged to have murdered 69-year-old restaurateur Yvonne Cosson earlier this week after he was dismissed by her over a dispute about wages.

Top French chef murdered in KwaZulu-Natal

A French chef who had made her home on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and earned accolades for her cooking over the years was found bludgeoned and burnt to death in her Ramsgate home, police said on Tuesday. The partially burnt body of Yvonne Cosson (69) was found covered with soil next to one of the walls of her home.

Two in court for Austrian’s murder

Two men are expected to appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in connection with the murder of a former Austrian footballer on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. Police spokesperson Superintendent Zandra Hechter said three men had been taken into custody — one of whom was arrested on Saturday for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Austrian man shot dead on KZN golf course

An Austrian national was shot and killed at Selborne Estate, which is enclosed by electric fencing, in Durban south, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday. The 46-year-old man booked into the estate at about 3pm on Friday and went to play a round of golf. His body was discovered on the course at about 6pm.

KwaZulu-Natal mayor found dead in car wreck

The 37-year-old mayor of a KwaZulu-Natal South Coast municipality was killed in a car crash, police said on Thursday. Police spokesperson Zandra Hechter said Mfundo Lushaba, the mayor of Umzumbe, was found dead in his Toyota Hilux double-cab about 10m from the Ifafa offramp on the N2 near the resort town of Hibberdene.

Thousands attend Matatiele demarcation hearings

More than 3 000 people packed the local soccer stadium in Matatiele as the second day of public hearings on the region’s controversial incorporation into the Eastern Cape started on Tuesday. Matatiele was incorporated into the Eastern Cape on February 28, hours before voting started in the local government election of 2006.

Serial-killer probe follows sugar-cane murders

South African police said on Wednesday they believed a serial killer was responsible for the deaths of eight women whose bodies were found dumped in sugar-cane fields on the KwaZulu-Natal. A police spokesperson for the Umzinto area said that while a forensics expert had not yet made his findings public, the most recent discovery of three bodies suggested a serial killer was at work.

Two more bodies found in KZN sugar-cane fields

Another two bodies have been found in the sugar-cane fields near the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) town of Umzinto, police confirmed on Friday. Spokesperson Superintendent Zandra Hechter said the bodies were discovered in the early hours of Friday morning adjacent to the Shayamoya township of Umzinto. Their identities were not known yet.

Five arrested for KZN sugar-cane killings

Five people have been arrested in connection with the murder of five women whose decomposing bodies were found in a sugar-cane field on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, police said on Monday. In Stanger, one person was arrested on Sunday evening. A further four people were arrested at a house in Chatsworth on Monday.

Police say they’re closing in on serial killer

Police are confident that they are close to making a breakthrough in the case of the alleged KwaZulu-Natal South Coast serial killer who has strangled five women and left their bodies scattered in a sugarcane field. Police spokesperson Zandra Hechter said a key witness in the investigation had apparently sat next to the alleged killer on a minibus taxi.
