Patient shot dead, employee wounded at Bara

A gunman shot and wounded an employee and killed a patient at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital on Monday afternoon, Gauteng police said.

The man entered the hospital during visiting hours at about 3.45pm and opened fire, said Captain Phillemon Khorombi. ”He shot a 52-year-old female employee and a male patient aged 35.”

The man was taken to an operating theatre, where he died. The woman was in a serious condition.

No arrests have been made and the motive for the shooting is not known.

Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

Last week, a patient was shot and a guard stabbed when patients unhappy with their medication tried to flee the Sizwe Hospital in Edenvale.

Police spokesperson Captain Piet Mnyageni said the incident occurred last Tuesday when patients attempted to leave the hospital premises. ”Patients were apparently unhappy with the medication they were receiving at the hospital,” he said.

Security guards tried to stop them but one patient produced a knife and stabbed one of the guards three times in his upper body. ”His colleague then reacted by firing a shot at the man,” said Mnyageni.

Both the guard and the patient were in a critical but stable condition.

Earlier in October, four staff at Seshego Hospital, near Polokwane in Limpopo, were killed when an employee went on a shooting spree shortly after being sacked, police said.

The victims included the chief executive officer, the human resource manager and the administration officer. — Sapa, AFP
