No bail in theft case for Dube murder suspect

Ludwe Gxowa, the man suspected of murdering reggae star Lucky Dube, was denied bail when he appeared with six others in the Balfour Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on theft charges, police said.

The men were charged with stealing copper cable valued at R150 000 from an Eskom power station near Grootvlei, Balfour, in September last year, said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

”The men were seen in a 10-tonne truck leaving the power station. The truck was loaded with copper cables from the power station,” said police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi earlier this week.

Police arrested the men close to the plant after receiving a tip-off about the truck.

While his six co-accused are out on bail for the robbery, Gxowa has been kept in custody.

He was out on bail when he allegedly assisted in the murder of Dube, said Hlathi.

The case was postponed until March 20. — Sapa
