A police officer demanding R5 000 to make a copper-cable theft docket disappear was arrested at a Wimpy restaurant in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, on Thursday, police said. The 35-year-old constable was assigned to the case last week after a 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing cables from his employer.
A disabled 65-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the rape of a 10-year-old girl near Hazyview, Mpumalanga police said on Tuesday. Captain Leonard Hlathi said the man, whose legs were deformed and therefore had to walk with the aid of crutches, allegedly raped the girl in Nyongani Trust near Hazyview at about 3pm on Monday.
Police have exhumed the body of a man alleged murdered by the executive mayor of Bushbuckridge. The body of Jeffrey Sedibe was exhumed on Friday, a day after the arrests of mayor Milton Morema (41) and a senior municipal official, Lakios Mosoma (42), said Captain Leonard Hlathi.
Thirteen reserve constables charged with corruption were set free after they appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. This was because the prosecutor had misplaced the charge sheet, said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi. The 13 were arrested last Wednesday.

Cases of murder, armed robbery and theft against seven men and a woman were on Friday postponed in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court, Mpumalanga police said. The eight are accused of killing businessman Sihlangoma Solomon Hlongwane, whose tongue was tied with a string and pulled out until he died.

Ludwe Gxowa, the man suspected of murdering reggae star Lucky Dube, was denied bail when he appeared with six others in the Balfour Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on theft charges, police said. The men were charged with stealing copper cable valued at R150 000 from an Eskom power station.

Two men who were found guilty of 21 charges against them — including seven counts of murder and six counts of rape — were sentenced to 445 years’ imprisonment each by the Middelburg High Court, Mpumalanga police said on Friday. The court found the men guilty on October 2 after a two-year trial.
Mpumalanga’s organised crime unit has arrested five men following a string of rapes in the province over the weekend. More arrests are expected. The unit’s spokesperson, Captain Leonard Hlathi, said on Tuesday that 27 rapes were reported throughout the province at the weekend.
