Revenge attack ends in murder

Seven Durban men who allegedly stabbed a 20-year-old petrol attendant to death were taking revenge and mistook their victim for a robber, police said on Monday

The seven — aged between 17 and 20 — were due to face a murder charge in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police spokesperson Captain Edmund Singh said the incident took place on Friday afternoon near Damarosa Secondary School in Chatsworth.

”The mother of one of the men was robbed earlier that day and the seven claimed they were taking revenge … they killed the wrong man,” he said.

A petrol attendant — whose name is unknown — was on his way home from work when he was accosted by the group. An altercation ensued between the victim and the men.

”The suspects began assaulting the attendant and he ran into a nearby yard. He took a chair to defend himself, but the group overpowered him with a hockey stick,” said Singh.

The victim was stabbed in the chest and died.

The group fled on foot through the school and to a home in Arena Park.
