Deadline for presidential pardons extended

The deadline for applicants to apply for presidential pardons for politically motivated offences has been extended until May 31, pardon committee chairperson Tertius Delport said on Monday.

”Some time ago we knew that we were going to run out of time for people to put in applications.

”We asked the president, and his office informed us this [Monday] morning that he will extend the deadline until the end of May,” said Delport.

The deadline for pardons for offences committed before June 16 1999 was decided on at a joint sitting of Parliament last year.

Mbeki initially granted a three-month window period, ending on April 15.

Delport said he would issue a statement on the outcome of the meeting with the presidency on Tuesday. — Sapa
