Cristiano Ronaldo been voted footballer of the year by the English Football Writers’ Association (FWA), completing a double after receiving the same accolade from his professional peers last week.
It is the second season in succession that the 23-year-old Portugal winger has received both of English football’s most prestigious individual awards.
Having scored 38 goals for Manchester United this season, Ronaldo was able to comfortably beat off competition from Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Portsmouth goalkeeper David James to retain the writers’ award.
Paul Hetherington, the chairperson of the FWA, said: ”Ronaldo’s award is no surprise given his brilliant form this season and incredible goal-scoring record.
”Cristiano was an overwhelming winner and, given his age, he has the potential and ability to dominate this award for years in an unprecedented way.” — AFP
