Commission makes R17m award against textile company

A KwaZulu-Natal textile company has to pay R17-million for not complying with the provisions of the National Textile Bargaining Council’s wage provisions, the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) said on Monday.

In a statement, Sactwu said Tai Yuen Textiles was ”guilty of a wage underpayment of 393 employees from 12 February 12 2007 to April 27 2008, amounting to R11,5-million”.

A Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) official confirmed that commissioner Jabulani Ngwane had made the R17-million award against the company, which is based in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands town of Mooi River.

Ngwane heard argument on June 10 and his judgement was handed down on Wednesday last week, the official said. — Sapa
