De Sa mocks Pirates’s defence

Bidvest Wits coach Roger De Sa said he expected more from Orlando Pirates after his team held them to a goalless draw at the Coca-Cola Stadium on Friday night.

”I expected something better from them in the first half and I think they’re still the Pirates of old,” De Sa told journalists after the match.

”At the back they give you a [scoring] chance but going forward they’re as good as any other team, but at the back they do give you chances, there’s no doubt about that.”

Pirates pressed hard in the second half and restricted Wits from going forward.

”We were lucky they did not score. If you told me I was going to get a point coming here tonight I would have taken it,” the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper said.

”We had our chances too but the boys did not take it and that’s the way the game goes.”

De Sa had special praise for defender Neil Winstanley whose mother passed away last week.

”Neil said he was okay to play after losing his mother. For me he gave a man-of-the-match performance and that is admirable. The younger players will learn a lot from him.”

Pirates coach Rudi Krol agreed with De Sa’s notion of wasted chances as his strikers Excellent Walaza and Rudzani Ramudzuli wasted good scoring chances.

”We created chances but did not score,” Krol said.

”It’s got nothing to do with me making changes or knowing my team. We did not finish our chances we created, we did not score and that’s the problem.”

The former Dutch international noted that the Absa Premiership was a tough league and that Pirates would not have an easy time of it.

”Every team has quality players and this is a tough league with little difference between most teams. It’s a competitive league and we have to fight hard to get points,” he admitted.

”Wits dominated in the first half but we dominated in the second half. I am not happy with the result as our aim is to win. I think it’s normal to want to win and
yes, I’m not happy with just a point. – Sapa
