The damage caused by runaway veld fires that destroyed the Schoemansdal Museum near Makhado is estimated at R3-million, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.
Captain Maano Sadike said the fire broke out on Tuesday night, destroying the information centre and the open-air museum, along with irreplaceable items.
”The curator was informed of the fire burning at the museum, he in turn contacted the police and firefighters. The fire burnt until Wednesday morning,” said Sadike.
He urged the public to stop fuelling veld fires.
”These veld fires are destroying indigenous trees and farming production was also affected,” said Sadike.
The department of sports and recreation said the museum would remain closed pending an investigation into the cause of the fire. — Sapa
