Milk producers advised to reduce output

The current market situation has negatively affected milk sales in the country, leaving milk producers with excess milk no one was buying, the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO) said in a statement on Monday.

”Market indicators in terms of milk supplies are currently indicating an over-production. Various factors, including somewhat muted consumer spending, have a negative effect on milk sales,” MPO
vice-chairperson Freddie van Zyl said.

He advised milk producers to keep the current market situation in mind when doing their production planning, and adapt their production accordingly.

”Should producers be able to produce less milk in the short term, it will help stabilise the market. There are a few options to consider, especially in view of lower producer prices,” he said.

Van Zyl advised milk producers to capitalise on the looming market improvements.

”Looking at economic indicators, it seems possible that the market can recover in the new year … milk producers must be ready to capitalise as soon as the market conditions improve,” he said. – Sapa
