Camp stops food for refugees

Baby formula and food are being smuggled into the Bluewaters refugee camp after volunteers were stopped from bringing supplies to the 600 refugees still living there.

The 100 refugees living in Site B at Bluewaters — of whom more than half are children — were given their last meal by the provincial disaster management team three weeks ago.

The approximately 500 refugees in site C — including more than 200 children — received their last meal from the province last Saturday.

This week police were called to the camp after the people from Site C attempted to walk to Site B to draw attention to their plight.

The refugees are now totally reliant on volunteers to provide food. However, last Saturday volunteers were denied access to the camp and have since resorted to smuggling in baby formula and food provided by the Jewish Board of Deputies.

Volunteers who spoke to the Mail & Guardian believe that authorities are withholding food in an attempt to force the refugees out. Electricity to the camps was cut on Tuesday and the toilets and kitchen containers were removed.

Last weekend a medical team was denied access to the camp and had to treat children outside the gates in the rain.

Policemen guarding the camp have told volunteers that they find the situation at the camps “inhumane”.
