Rules of rentals

One can spot a rental car a mile off: it normally has a GP or EC licence plate, a green triangle on the bumper and occupies that obscure part of the road that only rudderless tourists can find.

But the rental industry is not to be scoffed at. About 20% of cars sold in South Africa are to rental companies. In 2000 an average-sized rental company fleet was 20 000 and last year it more than doubled to 45 000. In 2000 the revenue generated from car rentals was less than R1-million. Last year it was close to R2-million.

Considering the high petrol price, you might want to fly to a holiday destination this year, which means hiring a car when you arrive. So, what should you look for when renting a vehicle?

Rental companies are self-insured, which means expenses are passed on to the renter. This is known as responsibility. Rental companies offer waivers which, if accepted and signed for, will reduce the renter’s responsibility and the excess amount in the case of an accident or theft.

Vehicle rentals work on the basis of 24-hour billing. A vehicle not returned on the stipulated date is charged an overdue fee. If you return the vehicle early, you will be charged only for the period used.

You should ensure that all drivers are listed on the agreement.

You will be responsible for traffic fines and you will be charged a handling fee of R175 for each fine. In the case of an accident, you will have to pay a handling fee of about R400.

Should the rental vehicle break down or if you are involved in an accident caused by your own negligence, you will be responsible for towing and storage fees.

And don’t forget to return the rental car with a full tank or you’ll be charged a fee for that as well.
