Following a call for schools to sponsor at least one intern teacher each, the University of South Africa (Unisa) has made a number of mentor bursaries available.
Unisa is offering a short course in mentoring, guidance and support for teachers and trainers who will advise intern teachers.
This comes after the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie (Saou) called for the establishment of a ”directed self-help programme to ensure that education of quality will continue to be offered into the future” to supplement the government’s teacher bursary scheme.
An integral part of the internship model is that an intern is placed with a competent and experienced teacher, who will assume the role of a mentor. Schools which already provide internships may apply for such bursaries for the relevant mentor.
However, applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis as there are a limited number of bursaries available.
