The National Union of Mineworker’s (NUM) said on Friday it had rejected the latest wage offer from Anglo Platinum (Angloplat), the world’s largest platinum producer.
The NUM said its members at Angloplat wanted an increase of 11% for the lowest paid category rather than the 10% offered by the platinum producer, which is a unit of Anglo American Plc.
Angloplat had offered increases of between 9% and 10%, including higher medical and maternity allowances.
”We want the company to consider to pay 11% to the lowest earners, and we shall discuss this at the next round [of talks] on September 7,” said Oupa Komane, the NUM’s deputy general secretary, who heads the union’s negotiations with Angloplat.
The NUM will seek to press Angloplat for the higher increase, but has not issued a strike threat, Komane said. — Reuters
